Royal Mail are today rolling out a new initiative called Nominate a Neighbour. It has been designed to boost their first-time delivery rates.
Customers throughout the UK will now be able to nominate a neighbour close to their address, to receive their parcels, the idea came from Royal Mail employees, who if they’re anything like my local postie have been unofficially doing this for years anyway.
The method involves asking customers for an alternative delivery address when they call in with their ‘Something For You’ missed delivery cards.
Under the Nominate a Neighbour initiative, the postman or woman will try the designated address first before trying other addresses nearby. This provides customers with further reassurance about the location of their parcel and helps postmen and women on their delivery rounds.
Sue Whalley, Royal Mail Chief Operations Officer, said: “This new initiative is great news for our customers as it offers further choice and convenience if there is no-one at home. For our postmen and women it means that they are even more likely to deliver parcels and letters first time rather than having to take items back to the office. First time delivery of parcels and signed for items is high in Royal Mail and in the trial delivery offices this improved further”.
The initiative was developed with staff in Tonbridge delivery office and was trialled in other offices across the UK. The Universal postal operator has agreed the initiative with the Communication Workers Union and ‘Nominate a Neighbour’ will be a new national guideline for postmen and women.
Sadly, Special Delivery items and international items requiring a signature are excluded from the delivery to neighbour scheme, however Signed For and Tracked 24/48 with a signature can be delivered to a neighbour. Customers can opt out of the delivery to neighbour scheme if they wish, although one would hope that most people have at least one neighbour with whom they’re on good terms with.
