The online offerings for trendy womenswear is fairly well served but for those uber-stylish clothes that the fashion conscious man wants, there’s less choice. That’s where grailed.com, founded by Arun Gupta, comes in.
It’s a New York based fashion marketplace for menswear so called because in the parlance a “grail’ is a long sought after fashion must have, apparently. It was founded in 2014 and is available to sellers from all over the globe. Have you tried it?
Several things stand out about this marketplace. It looks very good and there is an engaging, clean, crisp aspect to the site. Needless to say, you couldn’t be a high end fashion website without a beautiful interface. The second thing is the nature of the goods. Not many will be in the market for $270 tracksuit bottoms but if they come from the right designer and are sought after, this is where you’d come. You can access the goods via website or mobile app.
And they’re growing. Now boasting a team of 19 staff and 500k users they also claim to have more inventory from the most sought after designers than eBay. And such is their success that now they’re moving away from being purely a menswear site and offering a similar service for women, due to popular demand.
Their boast is clearly that they offer a place for genuine enthusiasts and a community of like-minded fashion addicts and that’s what keeps the style conscious coming back for more. But the challenge is to retain that community feel as they expand. Grailed is clearly a marketplace to watch and very much where we see ecommerce going: specialist, niche, curated marketplaces honed to a speciality sector. They even have a search filter called Cloaks & Capes.
