There have been some rumours going around that Magento could be about to end support for Magento 1 and effectively force everyone to upgrade to Magento 2. That would have put a lot of cost and development time on the shoulders of website owners around the world who would have had to struggle to upgrade.
Thankfully it’s not the case, Jonathan Pollard, CEO of Codisto, pointed us towards a press release confirming that Magento 1 will be supported for the foreseeable future
Magento stands behind our customers and will never leave a customer behind – you can rest assured that we have your back at every turn. Magento 1 has been and will continue to be supported for the foreseeable future. We have no intention of denying access to our world-class software and know your business relies on Magento to drive growth and differentiation for your brand.
– Jason Woosley, SVP Product & Technology, Magento
Magento did point out that Magento 2 is a superior product offering capabilities that improve site performance, provide better visibility into business results, and drive differentiated omnichannel commerce experiences. They added “We are confident that every merchant will benefit from moving to Magento 2, and look forward to seeing you upgrade when the time is right for you“.
To put your mind at rest, Magento have committed to a minimum 18-month notice period before they make any changes to support so, if you want to stick to Magento 1 for the moment, you know you’ll have at least a year and a half before you need to upgrade you website to Magento 2 or seek an alternative platform… although why would you want to leave a company that committed to it’s users?
