No primary category set

If you sell media (books, film, music and games) then there’s good news for you today. eBay have just launched a new dedicated category hub ‘The Entertainment Shop’ and want to become the home the new home of physical media. The curated on-site destination will be an extensive and vibrant selection of new, catalogue and pre-owned books, film, music and games across its marketplace from brands and sellers around the world.

The Entertainment Shop will serve as a one-stop shop for physical media offering great value and an unrivaled selection across categories with an emphasis on new releases. eBay has already established new partnerships with major studios to support retailers with new releases. Existing major sellers of books, DVDs, Blu-rays, CDs and Video Games, including musicMagpie, Wordery and Entertainment Alliance will also be enhancing their offers in line with eBay’s proposition.

“We want to be THE destination for physical media in the UK driven by best value, unrivalled inventory and competitive seller fees. The first item ever sold on eBay UK was a Scorpions CD in 1999 for £2.89 and now we are home to some of the world’s largest suppliers of books, music, film and games. The launch of The Entertainment Shop is a natural progression for eBay that will offer brands and sellers of all sizes the opportunity to capitalise on the UK’s enduring appetite for physical media.”
– Rob Hattrell, eBay UK’s Vice President

The Entertainment Shop offers for sellers

eBay’s physical media offer will deliver lower listing fees to publishers, producers, wholesalers and B2C sellers looking to grow their business and connect with eBay’s 23 million buyers in the UK. eBay will offer competitive marketplace fees, improved user experience, and prime marketing and advertising opportunities to support a weekly cycle of new releases.

How big is physical media in an electronic world?

eBay is already one of the world’s largest marketplaces for music and the resurgence of vinyl has created huge demand for new and pre-owned items. In the last year there were 8 million more searches for vinyl records and two new and pre-owned records were sold every minute on eBay UK.

Searches for Books, Comics & Magazines on eBay rose by more than 12 million since last year, and searches within the DVD, Film & TV categories were over 65 million. 13 DVDs and Blu-ray discs were bought every minute and nine video games and consoles were purchased every minute.

Sales of physical media are buoyant – Music, TV shows, Films, Computer Games and Books were worth an estimated £3.8bn annually in the UK in 2016. Physical media is one of the most popular categories on eBay. Over the last year there have been more than 830 million searches for physical media, a net year-on-year increase in searches of over 27 million.

  1. My ears perked up when I seen this, then started to read between the lines. Spin and more promos for Mr 100 days friends.

So far I can see Shop To, who have their own marketplace we are on it, plus they sell everything £1 more expensive on eBay, and if you are a GOLD member you get additional £1 off going direct.

Expect Game seek and Base will be on also soon along with Argos. All we be on preference rates from the rest of us and the search will be set towards their products.

I see nothing in the article about FEES, it just looks like another promo for large companies on eBay, that is Hattrell for you. Trust me there will be nothing for the majority of us.
Music Magpie who made it by selling from the channel islands for years hence massive tax advantages have killed the pre-owned trade, so much so we do not even do pre-owned on eBay or any marketplace they turn up on . Base ship anything under £18.99 From Switzerland minus the VAT, we have to pay full VAT, you can not compete on many budget lines.
No move to digital , we are already shifting digital on other sites.

Wholesalers who sell on eBay do not deal with them, we have actually stopped dealing with one company who we have spent about 100K with in last few years as they keep selling B2C. Half the stock the sell has been reworked anyway and they try and pass it as new.

They are not set up for pre-orders still, they are to expensive anyway.

Amazon are going direct to publishers and undercutting everyone, and if the game does not take off they just dump it killing the value straight away. So none of this will matter.

Game.co.uk Shop To and Game seek all offer better fees than eBay. 11% and 10% on Game seek. Plus we have started to sell consoles etc direct in the local area via Facebook marketplace saving us fees and courier costs it works. The margins in video games are at an all time low so.
