Amazon today announced plans to open a new robot operated fulfilment centre in Bolton in 2018. The use of robots doesn’t mean that Amazon won’t need staff however so they are to begin recruitment for 1,200 new, full-time permanent jobs.
Doncaster was the first UK Amazon fulfilment centre to be outfitted with robots and it’s becoming the norm due to the speed at which items can be picked and the higher density of goods that can be stored in a facility.
The investment in a new fulfilment centre in Bolton will take the total number of permanent jobs Amazon has created in the North West of England to more than 3,500.

Amazon will need a diverse workforce for the new Bolton warehouse including operations managers, engineers, HR and IT specialists. Last year Amazon announced that it would open fulfilment centres in Daventry, Doncaster, Warrington and Tilbury in 2017, creating more than 3,500 new permanent full time jobs. The Daventry site opened in February while Doncaster, Warrington and Tilbury have recently started their operations.
The demand for more Amazon fulfilment centres is driven by their phenomenal growth and it’s worth noting that over half the products sold on Amazon are supplied by third party sellers and not Amazon Retail. Many of these third parties do however use FBA to enable customers to order using Amazon Prime and so the companies warehousing requirements are growing at an ever more rapid pace.
