Magento is the first commerce leader to offer an ‘Amazon-like’ single click to purchase experience as a standard feature, now available in the latest release of Magento Commerce.
Magento specialists 247 commerce tell us that this is going to be a massive deal for retailers using Magento as it reduces the friction at checkout and let’s logged in customers make a purchase with one click of the buy button and no need to have any confirmation links or adding to basket and then checking out.
It’s all to do with the One-click patent Amazon owned which expired in September this year. Amazon still owns the “1-Click” trademark so other retailers will have to call a single click to purchase checkout something different, but the patent which was granted in the late 90s expired on the 11th of September 2017.
Magento are calling their new feature ‘Instant Purchase Checkout’ and it provides returning customers with a faster checkout experience by using previously-stored payment credentials and shipping information to skip checkout steps. When a customer selects the “Instant Purchase” button on a product detail page, they are immediately taken to a confirmation page where they can place the order. There’s no need to enter their address, payment information, or shipping preference. Magento takes care of all of that.
Merchants who have tested Instant Purchase have found that it can shorten the amount of time it takes to place an order by upwards of 90 percent. It is particularly well-suited for mobile shopping on a smaller screen. Other merchants have found that it helps to drive impulse sales. Shoppers can click and buy as they go through a site without the sticker shock of seeing the total cost of ALL items in their cart.
Magento 1 to be discontinued in 2018
On a side note, 247 Commerce also tell us that Magento will stop supporting Magento 1 at the end of 2018, and all Magento customers need to migrate to Magento 2. Start planning in the New Year to update your website if you’re still on Magento 1 as you’ll want the work completed well before the busy Black Friday and Christmas periods in Q4. Speak to your service provider and of course if you need help then 247 Commerce are able to assist you migrate.

It was initially announced that Magento 1 support would end in November 2018, but that was superceded by a statement saying Magento would in fact give 18 months notice of the end of support for Magento 1, and they have not given notice yet:
