Running a promotion like this is always hard work for eBay – they need to find sellers who can give deep discounts and sign them up to take part in the promotion and this is why the activity is generally only restricted to the large brands and retailers that sell on the marketplace.

Many eBay sellers would be keen for the publicity, but before complaining that you’re not included you need to ask if you’d be willing to give 20% off all your products across the board and if you have the depth of inventory that such a promotion would require.

Ultimately eBay’s Love Spring, Love 20% Off promotion is all about raising their profile to consumers and hopefully grabbing a few column inches of free advertising in the press. It’s a way of driving traffic to the site and whether the discounts come from the retailers, from eBay or are jointly funded between the seller and the marketplace, if they attract consumers to at least browse on eBay even if they don’t spend on that visit then it’s money well spent.

Would you take part in a promotion like this if invited? Could you give away 20% margin (or perhaps a proportion of the discount if eBay stumped up and shared some of their fees to fund the promotion)? And would you have the depth of inventory to sustain increased sales for a four day sale?
