Amazon has become the biggest worldwide customer of Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans following a commitment to purchase 20,000 vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz Vans announced it will be producing Amazon branded Sprinter vans for the new Amazon Delivery Service Partner program at a new facility in North Charleston, South Carolina. Small business owners will work with third-party fleet management companies to procure their customized vans and get special leases in order to keep their startup costs low.
Amazon announced that they would recruit hundreds of new entrepreneurs to start businesses delivering Amazon packages in a new Amazon Delivery Service Partner program. Amazon will take an active role in helping interested entrepreneurs start, set up and manage their own delivery business. The say that successful owners can earn as much as $300,000 in annual profit operating a fleet of up to 40 delivery vehicles. The aim is to recruit hundreds of new, small business owners to hire tens of thousands of delivery drivers across the US. We now know that the vehicles they will be driving will be Mercedes-Benz Sprinters.
“We’re proud to partner with Mercedes-Benz Vans to contribute to local economies through the order of Amazon branded Sprinter vans produced at their new plant in North Charleston. Thanks to the tremendous response to Amazon’s new Delivery Service Partner program, we are excited to increase our original order of branded Sprinter vans to 20,000 vehicles so new small businesses will have access to a customized fleet to power deliveries of Amazon packages.”
– Dave Clark, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations, Amazon
20,000 additional delivery vans on America’s roads will have a significant impact on traditional carriers and postal services. Every parcel carried by Amazon Logistics is one less for other carriers and parcels are the part of postal services where the profits are – letters don’t make money. At some point in the near future, Amazon’s reliance on external carriers will diminish until they are themselves one of the biggest carriers in the world. they’re already the third largest UK carrier.
