eBay are predicting that shoppers will be opting to buy second hand this Black Friday as the cost of living remains a top concern for consumers.
eBay UK have found that 52% of people will be buying second hand or refurbished products over the festive season to save money. 56% say that saving money is a key decision in changing their shopping preferences.
This year, eBay also say consumers intend to spend over £100 less on average than last year. This figure shows how inflation is affecting purchasing habits during the key shopping events that businesses heavily rely on. Buying pre-owned goods wont be a fresh habit for 2022 though, in 2021, eight out of 10 best-selling Black Friday deals purchased on the online marketplace were refurbished.
The growth of pre-owned purchasing on eBay was helped by the platforms fashion sponsorship of Love Island earlier this year. In September eBay UK revealed that nearly half of viewers (47%) admitted that they would consider buying pre-loved over new items since watching.
To keep consumers in the mood to purchase second hand this Black Friday, eBay will only promote refurbished and pre-loved deals for the Friday 25 November event this year.
The cost of living and climate crisis presents new parameters as consumer shopping habits continue to change, as we’ve seen a sharp increase in purchases for pre-loved and refurbished.
We know there’s a better way that we can do Black Friday together. Our hope is to inspire the nation to think differently when they’re doing their Christmas or Black Friday shopping this year – if they buy one or two pre-loved or refurbished items to start with, it’s a positive step that allows products to take on a new life by keeping them out of landfill.
