How the UK’s Top 500 retailers have transformed and optimised over the past decade

Category: Brands

The 2024 RetailX UK Top500 is the 10th annual ranking of the leading 500 retailers, brands and marketplaces and you can download it here! Today we speak to Ian Jindal, Editor in Chief for RetailX to discuss the report’s findings in more detail.

We look back over 10 years to how retailers have transformed from a store based infrastructure to digital based operations while at the same time the rise of the pureplay retailer who are now opening physical stores. Plus the massive impact of brands adopting D2C models and the rise of the marketplace, and indeed morphing of traditional retailers into marketplaces.

Perhaps the most important part of the interview is Ian’s view of the future which will determine those that will dominate the UK Top500 in future years. Previously Ian says, the best product, the best consumer insight and the best operational capability were enough, but moving forward purpose – value driven retail – shopping has to be more than just the basket and you need a level of innovation to stay close to the customer, make them want to shop with you not once but several times.
