BigCommerce CEO Brent Bellm on Open SAAS, Retailer Marketplaces & Instant Commerce

Category: Brands

At the Big Summit presented by BigCommerce, we sat down with CEO Brent Bellm to discuss everything from BigCommerce financials to Open SAAS, the explosion of retailer led marketplaces and the coming wave of Instant Commerce that will transform how consumers shop.

In the first half of this interview, we discuss BigCommerce’s profitability and how this will give brands confidence in the platform, but in reality the reverse is true – It’s because of brands confidence in the platform that they are profitable. This has come from Brent’s decision to take BigCommerce in a strategically different direction focusing on mid-market and enterprise clients and more importantly turning a SAAS platform into as close as possible to an open source model.

By opening up BigCommerce to solution partners for everything from payments to front end page builders, it has enabled brands to select not just world class services, but also best in breed for different use cases, such as offering different payment providers in different countries to best serve local needs.

As an Open SAAS platform, BigCommerce have also become opinionated as to solution partners which has enabled them to offer an out of the box solution with 100% Google Lighthouse scores as a fast track to commencing a website build. This isn’t prescriptive, yes it provides a working platform to start from and it’s then down to brands and their developers to build out the functionality with the goal of preserving the 100% scores, or staying as close to them as possible.

In the second part of our interview we turn to the future with Brent predicting two fast growing channels to watch. The first is retailer led marketplace growth with one of the world’s largest retailers due to launch in the UK this year. The second is Instant Commerce where local store inventory powers sub-same day delivery either in conjunction with marketplace logistics operations or with partners such as Uber and Deliveroo.
