Amazon Canada is continuing to expand with two announcements about new facilities and operations in the country.

The first news is that Amazon Canada has announced plans for a new fulfilment centre in Leduc County near Edmonton, Alberta creating more than 600 full-time jobs. The hefty 1-million-square-foot customer fulfilment facility will be Amazon’s second in Alberta, where it already employs more than 1,500 full-time staff in Rocky View County.

Once open, the new facility will be Amazon’s 11th fulfilment facility in Canada and joins Amazon’s current fulfilment centres in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.

Our ability to create over 600 good-paying jobs with great benefits is thanks to the network of support we’ve received and the skilled workforce in the region. We’re grateful for the welcome we’ve received from government and community leaders and excited by our growth in Alberta and ability to better serve our customers.
– Glenn Sommerville, Director of Operations in Canada, Amazon

The other development is a Toronto Tech Hub and Amazon says plans there will generate 600 new tech jobs in fields including software development, machine learning, cloud computing, digital advertising and artificial intelligence.

To accommodate the company’s continued growth in Ontario, Amazon has opened a new 113,000 square foot office in Scotia Plaza in downtown Toronto, owned by KingSett Capital and AIMCo. Amazon currently has more than 800 corporate employees in Toronto, primarily focused on research and software development for customer fulfilment technology, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Alexa, as well as business development for Amazon Advertising and AWS.

Amazon is excited to create hundreds of new highly-skilled jobs in Toronto. Toronto has a well-educated and diverse workforce, and there’s a real culture of innovation here. We look forward to continuing to invent for our customers in Canada and globally, and welcoming top-tier talent to fill exciting roles across Amazon.
– Tamir Bar-Haim, Toronto Site Lead and Head of Advertising in Canada, Amazon
