Best Offer conceals User IDs… or maybe not!

No primary category set

Whenever I’ve received a Best Offer on eBay the User ID has had the last three characters starred out. For instance if I made a Best Offer my User ID would appear as mountc*** instead of mountcomp.

That’s still the case when reviewing a best offer on eBay. However my latest Best Offers have yet to appear in My Messages but have appeared in my email inbox. What’s better is that the Best Offer emails received since 13th October in my email inbox contain the full User ID of the potential buyer allowing me to fully check out their previous buying history and feedback.

Personally I think it’s a good move, but as far as eBay are concerned it has to be a bit of a mistake. Not much point concealing the User ID on eBay if I already know it from the email is there? 😀

  1. There have been some issues with Best Offer.

We have had problems with the USA offers missing the “counteroffer” option.

We were the only ones reporting this problem, which may now have reverted to the correct format.

Others are also experiencing lots of different problems.

So maybe they are tinkering as you suggest, or maybe it is a temporary bug as in ours.

  2. To be honest, if the potential buyer has a half decent amount of previous feedback it’s not too difficult to work out their full id.

On several occasions in the past I have received acceptable best offers in the last few minutes of a listing with no possible way of replying before the listing ends. After a couple of minutes looking at their past feedback and a Google search I have found out their id and contacted them to arrange the transaction (all within the “safety” of eBay, of course).

  3. Hmmm… I wish mine were doing that. I had an B.O. on Monday in the last 30 seconds of the listing, with half the ID starred out in the email as well. I’d’ve accepted the offer if I could, but I couldn’t, and the first part of her ID was a word that’s so common across eBay, I haven’t a hope of figuring out who it was from 🙁

  4. This is such an important issue, if Ebay UK really believed that people were basically good, they wouldn’t star out the id would they? 🙂

They obviously have more trust on Ebay.com…

Sent mail to you and Chris, Sue. If you like it, use it as a filler or something 🙂
