Stephanie Tilenius joins Google as VP of Commerce

Stephanie TileniusEx-eBay executive Stephanie Tilenius is joining Google as vice-president of commerce, according to the LA Times. This is a new position at Google and is sure to fuel speculation that Google is to set up some rival to eBay.

An insider told the LA Times: “Stephanie will be leading our efforts to develop digital content and commerce in the cloud and will be our point person for everything commerce related — including product search and payments — an area where we see tremendous opportunity for growth.”

Stephanie was head of global product and North America until last September when eBay’s senior management was streamlined and her role was absorbed into Lorrie Norrington’s responsibilities. She said at the time that “now was the right time for her to pursue other career ambitions” and that she’d be leaving in early 2010.

If this is true, surely Google could find someone more qualified than Tilenius, her performance at eBay was less than the greatest StarBurst!
