Great Britain have just won their fifteenth Gold Medal at the 2012 Olympic Games and as per normal we’ll be bringing you an image of the stamp later today as soon as it’s available.
In the mean time we’re just 4 gold medals from matching the tally at the last Games in Beijing, and Royal Mail are keeping to their pledge of having the stamps available for purchase the next day, including Saturdays and Sundays.
Gold Post Boxes
They’re also busily painting postboxes gold and they’re popping up all over the country. Royal Mail have a Gold Pillar Box Finder interactive map to help you locate them, including if you click on a post box a picture of the gold medal winners and the exact location of the post box.
Printing & Distributing Gold Medal Stamps
We’ve had a number of people asking how Royal Mail are coping with the deluge of medals so here’s a video to show you how it’s possible. Medal winners stamps are printed overnight and distributed to Post Offices around the country by lunch time the next day, even if they medal isn’t won until late in the evening.
There are six printers around the country to aid distribution and they are printing literally millions of stamps each day, cutting down a design process that would normally take between 18 months and two years into a just a couple of hours.
