Amazon attracts 1M new Prime users in 3rd week of December

File under: hardly a surprise. But Amazon had a fantastic Christmas in the UK, US and Europe. And this quite wide-ranging selection of figures from Amazon will be of interest to many of you, depending on which verticals you sell in.

But one number from the list really jumped out for me: globally Amazon added 1 million new users to their Amazon Prime Service in the 3rd week of December. Prime is a subscription that provides free two day delivery on Amazon purchases.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said of the milestone: “Amazon Prime membership continues to grow, and we now have tens of millions of members worldwide. They benefit from all-you-can-eat free two-day shipping on millions of eligible items and our members have a voracious appetite.”

Prime is a fascinating driver of loyalty for Amazon customers who are keen to get the most out of the annual fee. Such a big jump in membership is a solid boost for Amazon and it will prove to be a Christmas boost that continues to reap rewards for them into 2014.

  1. How many of these “subscribers” are paying or just taking advantage of the free month Amazon kept touting?

  2. I agree with Mark, the vast majority will have signed up because it guaranteed free delivery before Xmas most of them will cancel it before they have to pay anything. Having said that from Amazon’s point of view there will still be a lot who don’t and therefore will look on Amazon first for anything they want, which is great for Amazon although not necessarily for marketplace sellers..

  3. What can we do as individual sellers to offer Amazon Prime type subscriptions or loyalty rewards on ebay?

Answer – not a lot as ebay don’t have any type of coupon or reward scheme that individual sellers can use or incorporate into their listings. Only the very general Nectar thingy which is next to useless as a loyalty incentive .

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if I could reward a buyer with a store specific discount code which could be used against a purchase from my own ebay store?

ebay are way behind the times with this sort of thing preferring to focus on forever making search ever more complicated or creating new even more complicated methods and choices to send messages to whoever.

  4. Just as an addition guys, as from today Amazon are no longer doing free super saver delivery on Books, Music, Film & TV, Blu-ray, Software or PC & Video Games unless your order is above £10. I guess the City pressure to want them to start showing a profit is finally pushing them to change, plus at the same time they will be hoping to sign up even more people onto Prime.
Now this could be good for marketplace sellers.
