Amazon have launched a 3D Printed Products store in the US. The new 3D store gives customers access to more than 200 unique print on-demand products, many that can be customized by material, size, styles and color variations, and personalized with text and image imprints.
Customers can personalise the style of the products which will then be professionally 3D printed and shipped to them. You can, depending on the product, choose colours, styles and text. You can already buy many items with these choices but the retailer has to hold them in stock. With 3D printing and not stock to hold the possibly variations for customers to choose from are endless.
“The introduction of our 3D Printed Products store suggests the beginnings of a shift in online retail – that manufacturing can be more nimble to provide an immersive customer experience. Sellers, in alignment with designers and manufacturers, can offer more dynamic inventory for customers to personalize and truly make their own” said Petra Schindler-Carter, Director for Amazon Marketplace Sales”.

This is just a category for 3D printed products, not Amazon running a “print on demand” service.
In the future it would make sense for Amazon to run a full print on demand service (as they currently do with books). This would allow designers to have a global presence (with the items printed locally).
The prices are currently far too high to be competitive (especially for non-customised products).
