Social platform Snapchat is experimenting with ecommerce, according to reports.
Snapchat is an expanding social network, especially popular with millenials, that allows users to send temporary videos and images to their fiends. Rather than storing the content, it quickly expires. Snapchat also curates content from various media including Cosmopolitan, Vice, BuzzFeed, Mashable and MTV.
Snapchat board member Joanna Coles says of the foray in to ecommerce: “Sweet is a channel on Snapchat that Hearst and Snapchat have done together, but at some point that will morph into an ecommerce platform so you will be able to buy from it.” She also noted that as it stood the technology to do exactly what Snapchat wants to do isn’t yet available.
It will be interesting to see how this develops but it’s an interesting new horizon and could be a big deal in the future as social media companies strive for greater monetisation and profitability.
