Google Home challenges Amazon Echo

No primary category set

Google already says that 20% of mobile searches it does come from a voice command. And now they’re upping the ante with the launch of Google Home, a direct competitor to Amazon’s Echo/Alexa.

The idea is that you can use the little beacon to do searches, make notes, play music, shop for you, and all sorts, just by addressing it. The device is quite nifty and attractive. Here’s the promo video:

At launch it is only usable with a single Google account but they say soon it will work with multiple logins for households with more than one resident.

And what does all this have to do with ecommerce? Of course, Amazon already has its own product Echo/Alexa for this and Facebook and Apple also have similar products but it’s the voice command element that’s crucial to consider. We’re going to see much more of it and it will impact ecommerce. Think Star Trek.

To give you a flavour of that, m’colleague Chris Dawson spoke about voice commands in relation to ecommerce and marketplace sellers in part of his talk at IRX a few weeks back and you can have a watch of his presentation here on Youtube.

  1. I have to say when i read 20% of searches are voice i thought something must be wrong.

After a quick non-voice google search I was right. Google said 20% of searches on it’s mobile app are voice. far from 20% of overall searches

    Just FYI!
