eBay UK’s Murray Lambell highlights changes to selling

No primary category set

The last two years have been challenging, first with Brexit, then the pandemic, then soaring fuel and energy prices and then Russia invading Ukraine. Sellers are if nothing vocal and have been giving eBay their feedback on the service they receive. eBay have been listening and eBay UK General Manager, Murray Lambell, has highlighted some of the changes to selling on eBay recently introduced.

Below, we reprint Murray’s message in full:

As we head deeper into 2022, I’d like to take this moment to say thank you for choosing to run your online business on eBay. Your goals are important to us, and we want to ensure that you get the support you deserve from eBay to go on and achieve great things this year.

We understand that your needs as a seller are constantly changing, so we’ve been listening hard, identifying issues that matter to you, and working to improve the seller experience on eBay. This is so you can continue to hit those targets, increase sales, and overcome barriers to thrive as a business. Based on your feedback, we’re making some changes that will help you to:

Sell more

Get better visibility of your repeat customers and new tools to showcase your brand story.

Get better fee margins

Benefit from a reduced fee structure for low-cost items in a number of selected categories.

Stay protected

We’re implementing fairer credit policies and complete refunds, as well as keeping your fees fixed.

Feel supported

With constant growth comes constant challenges, so we know there’s always more work to be done, but we really appreciate your business — eBay wouldn’t be the success it is without all your hard work.

The team and I send our best wishes to you as we head into the next quarter, and as always, thank you for selling on eBay.

  1. “We understand that your needs, as a seller are constantly changing” Well not really, eBay. As sellers we HAVE to change our way of listing because eBay keeps changing first. I want to buy low and sell low but make a profit. I want eBay to slow down all these change for changes’ sake please except please make it easier for me to find what I want PS I sell seven inch vinyl records and there is not even a category on eBay for them despite the fact that for many many years they were the biggest format selling on the planet (and still are in the collector’s market) Never mind, I can buy them elsewhere fortunately

Right, where to start with this.

1 – Volume discounts have been abolished, so sellers such as ourselves are now paying more than a private individual who’s clearing out their loft.
2 – eBay managed payments reporting is a mess, so it’s incredibly hard to get a true value of the fees you’re paying, and don’t get me started on eBay fees and VAT.
3 – As someone else mentioned, search is a joke.

This and 300 other reasons are why we’ve built our own Magento store and are carefully moving our stock onto there.
The customer base on eBay are almost encouraged to complain / scam and rip us off, it just DOES NOT happen on your own website.

Tired of it all, I chatted to Murray at eBay open and he seems a decent chap, but the site needs massive massive work or it’s going to continue to lose sellers like us that spend £50k+ a year on fees,.
