London Lions embrace cryptocurrency

London Lions, has partnered with BitPay – the world’s largest provider of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency payment services. The partnership – which represents the first-ever agreement between BitPay and a UK basketball team – will enable fans to transact with the club using more than 100 different crypto wallets and exchanges including Coinbase, Exodus Wallet and Trust Wallet.

Prioritising the fan community, BitPay will work with the club as part of a long-term commitment to increase financial literacy and general awareness around cryptocurrency and effective money management.

Through a community led programme of knowledge sharing and practical experience, the Lions and BitPay hope to equip fans with the skills, understanding and confidence needed to manage finances and transactions in a future-facing, secure manner. This is amidst a climate in which a staggering 81% of young people feel anxious about money and 72% want to learn more about personal finances.

This is an interesting move, as while millions have invested in cryptocurrency, relatively few regular consumers routinely use it as a way to transact. Outside the tech industry, I have precisely zero friends who have ever bought or sold cryptocurrency as an investment, let alone made a purchase with it.

The London Lions – BitPay news comes at a time when the UK Government have just announced plans to regulate crypto to protect consumers and provide clarity to consumers and businesses, demonstrating how new crypto still is, even though it’s been around for almost a decade and a half.

We remain steadfast in our commitment to grow the economy and enable technological change and innovation – and this includes cryptoasset technology.

But we must also protect consumers who are embracing this new technology – ensuring robust, transparent, and fair standards.

Andrew Griffith, Economic Secretary to the Treasury

When transacting with London Lions, once you have entered your contact information and address, then selected a shipping option, you’ll be able to select ‘BitPay – Pay with Crypto’ and then click the ‘Pay now’ button to begin the payment process via BitPay. More familiar payment methods will still be available.

The London Lions realize the potential for crypto to transform the UK professional sports industry, making payments faster, more secure, and less expensive on a global scale. Our goal at BitPay is to make accepting crypto a seamless process and increase adoption as we believe crypto is the future of payments.

– Merrick Theobald, Vice President of Marketing, BitPay
