Walmart trials grocery collection kiosks

Walmart has enjoyed considerable success in recent months but its also feeling the pinch from Amazon. In the first quarter of 2017 the retail giant saw a 63% leap in online sales over the period year on year.

And to further augment that success, Walmart has launched it’s first collection kiosk in US cart Oklahoma City. The service offers same day collection, and offers more than 30k items times that can be collected for free, 24/7 There’s a $30 minimum purchase.

There’s nothing particularly innovative in this development and doubtless the trial will roll out across America in due course. It gives Walmart the opportunity to leverage its magnificent fulfilment network, and real estate, and offer greater convenience to shoppers. It will be interesting to see whether the new system is embraced by US shoppers. Walmart has said that they will be introducing discounts on goods that shoppers order online and then collect at a store location.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon says: “Our stores are located within 10 miles of nearly 90% of the U.S. population, so this is convenient for many of our customers, and also saves them money when they order online and pick it up during their visit to our stores.”
