Google have announced that their new Product Listing Ads will start to appear on Smartphones for product related search terms.
When a user enters a shopping-related search, a commercial format that displays products in a single unit may appear above organic search results. This ad unit is labeled as a ‘Sponsored’ and displays rich product images, prices, retailers, and more. This mobile shopping experience will be available in all markets currently serving Product Listing Ads.
If you want your Product Listing Ads to appear on Smartphones then you’ll need to upgrade your Product Listing Ads to “enhanced campaigns” and make appropriate bid adjustments in your AdWords account. Enhanced Campaigns enable you to easily manage bids across devices, locations, and time of day.
Once you’ve made the edits required your Google Product Listing Ads will be automatically eligible to be displayed in search results on smart phones.

So google adds will appear on the first page of smartphone google search at the top or at the beginning of any organic search. Wonder what the EU czars will make of that? Seems to make smartphone search useless if it isn’t already (don’t have one so don’t know how useless it is)
I believe it is only triggered when Google thinks you are searching for a product so a search for “Just how deranged is David Cameron?” would not where as “David Cameron Autobiography” would.
