Shopify have announced that by the end of July you customers will be able to checkout on your own website domain, rather than being directed to checkout.shopify.com to complete their purchase.
You (and indeed your customers) may have never realised that they effectively leave your website when it comes time to pay for their purchase. However the odd buyer might check the URL and do a double take – anything that slows down or adds friction to the purchase process isn’t a good thing, so Shopify are fixing it.
“The checkout is one of the most important parts of your store, and now it belongs to you.”
Shopify will provide all merchants with a free SSL certificate to give customers the reassurance that they are on a secure website. Effectively the back end won’t be any different so there’s no work for you to do – transactions will still be processed by Shopify, it’s just that to the customer it’ll appear that it’s your own checkout on your own URL.
Checkout on your own domain is free for all merchants and will be activated automatically, there’s literally no setup required.
EV SSL certificate for Shopify Plus merchants
Shopify Plus merchants can get a free Extended Verification (EV) SSL certificate. This not only displays a padlock in the URL bar, but also turns the text green giving added reassurance to your customers that they are on a secure site when completing their purchase and that their personal information is protected.
Shopify naturally spend a lot of time testing and securing checkout so most merchants would be best advised to leave well alone. However Shopify Plus merchants can also edit the look and code for checkout should they so wish.
