Meet John Boumphrey incoming Amazon UK Country Manager

John Boumphrey is a name you will hear a lot more about in the next few years. From mid November, John Boumphrey will take on the role of Amazon UK Country Manager as the outgoing Doug Gurr leaves Amazon to become the director of the Natural History Museum.

John Boumphrey was Music & DVD Director at Amazon UK from 2011 to 2013 and then Home & Leisure Director to 2015. The start of 2016 saw him move to Seattle to become an Amazon Vice President overseeing the Consumables Programs before a return to London in 2018 where he ran Amazon Fashion across Europe.

Now as the UK Country Manager in waiting, John Boumphrey takes on one of Amazon’s most exciting country sites. Unique as an Island, Amazon Shipping is one of Amazon’s most promising future profit centres, fuelled by Seller Fulfilled Amazon Prime and now a carrier for non-Amazon parcels as well. Plus the UK has traditionally been one of the top countries for online consumer spending. John will also have to oversee what looks set to be a tricky and very busy winter as Coronavirus pandemic lockdown restrictions start to tighten once more.

“I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to lead Amazon’s UK business, helping us to serve our UK customers and communities, as well as supporting our employees and thousands of businesses the length and breadth of the country. It’s hard to imagine that there were around 2,500 UK employees when I started almost 10 years ago, and since then I’ve seen a UK workforce that will this year grow to more than 40,000.”
– John Boumphrey, (incoming) UK Country Manager, Amazon

Prior to joining Amazon, John worked at Home Retail Group (Homebase) for almost five years and previously, in what appears to be almost a default requirement for marketplace top level leaders these days, he spent over 7 years at Bain & Co.
